Understanding ASD and SPD for Educators

Service Description

This course is designed to help educators understand and recognize the signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) in their classrooms. Learn the basics of autism, how to recognize signs and symptoms, and how to create an inclusive learning environment that meets the unique needs of students on the spectrum. Through lectures, videos, interactive activities, and self-reflection, gain a comprehensive understanding of how to create an autism-friendly classroom. By the end of this course, develop an understanding of how to identify and support children on the autism spectrum and those with sensory processing disorder. Course formats: This course is offered in group courses and online format when available. Acceptance information: This course is accepted for professional development training requirements and annual in-service hours/credits in most states. Learning Outcomes: ● Define Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). ● Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with ASD and SPD. ● Analyze the needs of students with ASD and SPD in educational settings. ● Develop an understanding of effective strategies for teaching and supporting students with ASD and SPD. ● Formulate appropriate classroom plans and objectives for students with ASD and SPD. ● Assess the impact of ASD and SPD on student learning and development. ● Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with parents of students with ASD and SPD. ● Utilize evidence-based practices to foster a positive learning environment for students with ASD and SPD. ● Identify resources for further understanding of ASD and SPD. Topics covered: ● Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder ● Exploring Sensory Processing Disorder ● Applying Accommodations for Students with ASD and SPD ● Neuro-Diversity in the Classroom ● Strategies for Building Connections with Students Assessment methods: Multiple choice quiz and/or written assignments. Instructional methodology: Interactive Instruction, experiential learning, read written material, view videos, and listen to audio segments.
