Building Blocks to Early Learning
Introduction to Early Learning: Building upon foundational skills
Service Description
This course focuses on the Pyramid of Learning and the building blocks that support the foundation of early academic success. The Pyramid of Learning is a helpful visual for understanding why the sensory systems are so important for the development of children! It shows the sensory systems as the foundation for many other areas of development. Children need a strong foundation of nourishment for the central nervous system [BRAIN!] to attend, behave and learn. This course includes an overview of the sensory systems, sensory motor development, perceptual-motor development and cognition intellect. Become a skilled educator in accessing what level your students may be on within the pyramid and create lessons and activities that will assist in reaching higher learning. Course formats: This course is offered in group courses and online format when available. Acceptance information: This course is accepted for professional development training requirements and annual in-service hours/credits in most states. Learning Outcomes: • Familiarize yourself with the Pyramid of Learning, an illustration that depicts a general idea of the development of the central nervous system as it relates to early learning, foundational skills of young children, and what developmental skills build upon each other. • Learn useful information that organizes student skill sets into their underlying characteristics and prioritizes what should be addressed in the classroom to achieve higher learning potential. • Learn how each level of the Pyramid of Learning builds on the skills from the previous level. For example, a child who has not developed strong gross motor skills will have difficulty with fine motor skills, such as writing. Similarly, a child who has not developed strong social and emotional skills will have difficulty with language and literacy skills. Topics covered: • Foundational Skills • Sensory Systems • Sensory-motor development • Perceptual motor development • Cognition intellect Assessment methods: Multiple choice quiz and/or written assignments. Instructional methodology: Interactive Instruction, experiential learning, read written material, view videos, and listen to audio segments.
